Timeline for research to be approved by the committee 

  • The Research Committee will revert with feedback 2 weeks from the date the Research Application form is received.
  • Following feedback, amendments may be required. The researcher is to come back with amendments 1-2 weeks from the date of the feedback.
  • If no further amendments are required, the committee will proceed to assist with recruiting groups requested for testing. This could take 1 -2 weeks.
  • The time taken for approval to be given could be between 6 – 8 weeks.

On-going research: Preschool Teachers Dealing with Learners who are Potentially Gifted and Learning Disabled in Singapore’s Preschools


Ever wondered why your preschooler appears to be gifted in some areas but struggles with basic skills such as reading and handwriting? You may be working with a twice-exceptional student!

Preschool education is a critical first step in the educational journey of learners who are potentially gifted and learning-disabled, known also as twice-exceptional (2e) learners. 

This qualitative study aims to develop a substantive theory on the perspectives of preschool teachers educating five and six-year-old 2e preschoolers. 2e learners, given their unique position, form a group that has been under-investigated and preschool teachers encounter such learners in their classrooms without a national, formalised scheme catering for such learners. 

Through purposive selection and as the understanding of this social phenomenon is best reviewed through the eyes of the people who live it, preschool educators comprising varying experience levels and roles will be included for maximum variation. 

Data collection methods include:

  1. Document analysis, 

  2. Semi-structured individual interviews 

  3. Unstructured observations (optional) 


The findings from this study will go towards raising awareness of the 2e population through descriptions of the phenomenon and the generated theory may enhance the provision of support for 2e learners while considering future actions required to further develop teacher readiness and school policies aimed at supporting preschoolers. 

Schools and individual participants in this study may be given access to free training, such as the 2021 DAS Preschool Seminar and consultation support for students. 

As twice-exceptionality is in its infancy in Singapore, your support of this study will encourage more attention and effort towards helping this population.
